The Visit of the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band
On Wednesday May 14th Chatswood High School hosted the visit to Sydney of the world renowned Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band. The invitation to organise their visit came from jazz musician James Morrison. The band arrived at the Qantas Terminal having flown in from Brisbane. They were taken to the Mantra Hotel, soon to make their way to the Chatswood Concourse for their two concerts.
At 1.30pm they performed a concert to 850 school students. Students from twenty local schools had purchased tickets to listen to a band that was visiting Sydney for the very first time. The GGBPB has earned such a reputation since its inception 12 years ago, that many of the younger generation who had come to the concert were already well aware of their tremendous music making. The concert was fantastic!
Their music had great audience appeal and they were warmly received. A bonus for many was the performance with the band of our own James Morrison. At the conclusion of the concert, the students made it very clear they would love to see the Phat Band back in Sydney again.
Following on the concert, the Chatswood High Big Band had a workshop with Gordon Goodwin and James Morrison. Along with the rehearsal, students had the opportunity to ask questions. Gordon and James were both willing to share their thoughts, experience and ideas with the students.
Whilst the afternoon concert was the first concert the Phat band had performed in Sydney, there was much excitement as the evening concert drew near. The 7pm Concert commenced with a performance of the Chatswood High Big Band under the leadership of Warwick Alder. They started with ‘Broadway’ by Nestico. This piece had solos from Euan Chaffey on Trumpet and Josh Glass on Alto Sax. In contrast the band then played ‘Puffy Taco’by Lopez. This featured Tom Avgenicos on Trumpet with a special appearance by James Morrison on Trombone. James was in good form and was well received. Following on, James introduced Gordon Goodwin, and together they played ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ with the backing of our big band. It was a nice way to start the concert.

Next on the program was The Generations in Jazz Academy Big Band from Mount Gambier under the direction of Graeme Lyall. This very talented group of musicians had only been rehearsing for ten weeks. The performed a bracket of three pieces, which included a vocalist. They were excellent, and showed what could be achieved by talented musicians in a very short space of time.
Marian Petrescu was a name perhaps not known to so many before the concert. A guest at this year’s Generations in Jazz weekend in Mount Gambier, Marian was also invited to
do the short tour to Brisbane and Sydney with the Phat Band. Marian is an incredible jazz pianist and the Sydney audience loved his
performance. His fingers moved so fast; yet he played what seemed to be just the right number of notes! His short set also included bassist Phil Stack, drummer Gordon Rytmeister and James Morrison. Marians’accompaniment to James’ trombone solo was just beautiful! We’re hoping that Marian might pay us a visit again sometime soon.

There was a twenty minute interval – just enough time for the Chatswood High and Generations Bands to get some photos with Phat Band members! The second half of the concert was all the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band. It was fantastic, the first performance
of the Phat Band in Sydney. At the end of a very busy schedule and a lot of travelling they played with an enormous amount of energy, and their obvious enjoyment and fun as they played was infectious. This was important to the younger musicians in the audience. For the next 100 minutes the band performed a mix of old favourites with newer repertoire from their latest
‘record’ – ‘Life in the Bubble’.

Just when we thought the concert couldn’t get any better, James Morrison was introduced and came on to feature with the band. Following a couple of pieces especially composed for James with the Phat Band, he ‘joined the band’ and moved in to the trumpet section. In ‘Back Row
Politics” each of the trumpet players takes a solo and proceeds to out- do the previous trumpet player. There was a lot of fun in the performance by the band of this piece, not to forget the wonderful playing of the flute section! This number proved to be a great hit with the audience.

The concert concluded with a lively rendition of ‘Jazz Police’ which featured a terrific solo from the percussionist. He had the audience spell bound with the speed in which he got around the congas. It was a fantastic evening; so many fantastic musicians gracing the stage at the one performance. We’re all hoping we get the opportunity to repeat the night next year!

On Wednesday night, Chatswood Concourse was host to one of the greatest big bands in the world. And the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band were there as well! In all seriousness, everyone who attended the concert was in for a huge treat. The night began with the Chatswood High School big band, who played three pieces, one of which featured James Morrison on trumpet and Gordon Goodwin on tenor saxophone. The Generations in Jazz band from Mount Gambier also performed, followed by Marian Petrescu, who definitely lived up to James Morrison’s description as one of the best musicians, on any instrument, ever! During the interval, the Big Phat Band came out, and we were lucky enough to befriend the percussionist Joey DeLeon, who was a wildly energetic huge entertainer all throughout their performance. From the moment the Big Phat Band started, they were mind blowing; each piece they played was as funky as the next and had everyone tapping their toes. They were so together and in time, and every solo proved that even individually they are all amazing musicians; their banter also kept the audience entertained and it was fun to watch how the interacted with each other even while performing. As well as playing their own pieces, they performed their take on the famous piece Rhapsody in Blue which featured some amazing clarinet playing. The fun was taken to a new level when James Morrison came out with his trumpet and ‘superbone’ and the band played Backrow Politics, a trumpet feature which was supposed to be his audition for the Big Phat Band. This catchy, upbeat piece (which even included some cool instrument dancing) turned into a hilarious
competition of which trumpet player could play the highest, and then quite unexpectedly, the saxophone section all pulled out flutes and proved their musical skill in yet another area. The band finished with a piece called Jazz Police and sent the audience home buzzing! It was an unforgettable night of world class music, and I’m sure everyone hopes to see Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat Band back in Sydney soon for more.

Last night, the concourse had under its roof, some of the greatest musicians on the planet. Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band played the tightest, meanest big band music I’ve ever heard and James Morrison played his horns like some musical messiah. But the awesome playing of Marian Petrescu can’t be ignored. I have never heard anyone play any instrument with anywhere near as much technical skill as he managed. I think even James Morrison was impressed although not beaten. Big Band 1 was solid and pulled ahead by James and Gordon as they proceeded to play a chorus of call and response without accompaniment on Sweet Georgia Brown. After some insane jazz combo action with James Morrison, Marian Petrescu and his group, the Big Phat Band came on. Gordon Goodwin enjoyed his theatrics, opening with a fanfare introduction and then proceeding to deafen one thousand people with his crazy big band. The band played tonnes of pieces including an unbelievable performance of the classic Rhapsody in Blue which had me humming it all day the next morning. However, the second half of their set stood out. The band played a trumpet feature piece in which five trumpets including James Morrison attempted to outplay each other which involved notes which are too high to appear on paper. The flutes definitely stole the show for that one though. If there was any doubt that James Morrison wasn’t the best player in that room, it was removed when he stood out the front of the band and played a trumpet and a trombone (one in each hand) and played a call and response with himself. As if this wasn’t enough, the band finished with a fifteen minute drum solo from two drummers, one on the kit, and another on assorted bits of percussion such as bongos, congas, cowbells etc. (he played with his elbows!). All in all it was a pretty mindblowing show.
Congratulations on putting on such a remarkable event with the GGBFB. Our students (and staff) were buzzing after the gig and today as well. I’m sure there were plenty of ‘light bulb moments’ with the students. We appreciated you inviting us and it’ll inspire the kids for some time to come.
Thanks for the concert last night. The show was amazing and we had a great time.
The concert was fantastic. The Phat Band – what energy, what a privilege to have them here in Sydney. The pianist was incredible; how can you move that fast over the keys? And James Morrison never fails to delight; how lucky we are.
Blooming fantastic! Thank you.
Thanks for your organisation. Last night was just wow! Fantastic! One of the best concerts I’ve been to for ages. Just hoping that there’s another one around the corner. Anyway thanks for the
concert!
We thought it was amazing. Our kids did a great job - what an amazing experience for them! Thanks so much for organising it. And yes, the Big Phat Band were incredible - great music and they were clearly having such fun.

That was the most INSANE thing I have ever seen!! The Big Phat Band... There are no words. Every musician in that band is worthy of being a Gordon Goodwin! And James Morrison omg what a legend. The trumpet feature piece was my favourite for the spectacle and the humour ( lol the flutes!!). And the
pianist !!! Argh so much talent in one room. Jazz academy band were great too (the drummer was particularly amazing ) but my all time favourite was our big band of course 😃 They sounded awesome and can hold their heads high next to the
others.
The Chatswood High Band were fantastic - the Big Fat Band sensational and the whole night was wonderful. Congratulations to the School and everyone involved.
It was unbelievable, magical, full of passion, joy and mind blowing concert we feel so privileged. THANKS for bringing music into our life

WOW!!! What an amazing line up of performances. Excellent showmanship and talent on display. We have a whole new level of respect for Mr. James Morrison, he rose to the challenge of "auditioning" and then set the bar much, much higher. Many patrons thought it admirable/rare that both Mr. Morrison and Mr. Goodwin performed with CHS students. I was made particularly aware as the night progressed, of the commitment these professionals have toward teaching, supporting and encouraging young talent. Aside from their amazing skills and talents, is their ability to mix it up and contribute to enriching the talent pool. This is possibly what makes them Respected Professionals. Patrons were incredibly enthusiastic to see CHS perform. We thought CHS held their own very well and met the high expectation of the audience from the start. The evening also provided students and parents with the opportunity to see what is possible as a musician matures as well as what can be achieved individually and as a band. Hopefully this experience will be an inspiration for all CHS Ensembles. THANK YOU for pulling off the HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR!!!
Would just like to pass my thanks for your organisation of yesterday’s awesome concert. Thoroughly enjoyed the matinee session...I think my son was inspired as he was keen to practise when he got home. Thank you for organising such a great event, enjoyed by all.
Just want to send my congratulations on what was a wonderful night last night. Our kids not only played wonderfully but were given the opportunity to see the best of the best in action. The energy from the Phat Band was phenominal! To see teenagers sitting at the balcony, eyes glued in appreciation of the music gives an indication of how impressed they were...we old fogeys are easy to impress but to see the kids really get into it was awesome. Thanks for providing our children with such an experience.

May I offer my thanks and congratulations for the Big Phat Band concert last night, as you would expect, they were superb, Thank you for providing this opportunity in Sydney! I would also like to pass on my congratulations to the members of the Chatswood High Stage Band who opened the show, they are a great credit to the school and their leader, Warwick Adler, it was wonderful to see and hear such a fine ensemble, who started the evening off at an incredibly high standard! Again congratulations to all.
Great concert!!! All of it! Who will you have for next years’ concert? How do we book?
Congratulations on a great concert. Fantastic night of jazz, and felt very proud to be a CHS parent. Thank you so much for your organisation of this event, which must have required a colossal effort, and for all the wonderful opportunities you provide for our kids in the music programme. Finally, when you told us you were staking the caramello bear money on this
project I nearly fainted- but congrats on having the courage and vision to become an impresario and reap such fabulous rewards for the school and bands.

Great experience for our kids
Please pass onto our performing students how fantastic they were, watching them from the audience I was again beaming with pride at the abundance of talent and as always I am in awe of what they are able to do. I have heard Puffy Taco a number of times now and seem to enjoy it more every time. I also want them to know that I have received emails from members of the public congratulating me on the performance of our students. Congratulations on a highly successful night, my wife and I enjoyed the entertainment immensely and can’t wait for the next musical event. Sincere thanks from a very grateful and proud relieving Principal. (J Hong)

WOW - what an amazing night we all had at The Concourse!!! Thank you SOOOO much for all of your efforts and that of all of the people who helped on the night - it was an outstanding concert and I was ‘blown away’ with the organisation of it all. Congratulations and I do hope that the school was happy with the night and the outcome. Please pass on our thanks to all of the children who helped on the day and to those behind the scenes that I did not
meet. I know for a fact that the Big Phat Band, Gordon, Marian, James and The Academy band were thrilled with the concert. Everyone had such a great time. Thank you once again!
This was a fantastic event that you helped organize. Thank you!!
Thank you, thank you ,thank you Gavin Staines, Chatswood HS Big Band, James Morrison & The Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band for a truly spectacular evening of first class music. 14 May 2014 will be a concert to remember always. What an awesome experience for our Chatswood HS
musicians! Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Gavin Staines and Chatswood HS for all the hard work that enabled our students to have such an incredible experience. Thanks also to the amazing musicians and educators including Gordon Goodwin, James Morrison, Graeme Lyall and Gavin
Staines for your generosity of spirit and time and your belief in our young people and their talents.

Thought it was a fantastic night. Overall I thought it was a great success. Well done with all your hard work.
On Wednesday 14th April my husband and I had the pleasure of attending the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band performance at Chatswood Concourse. We were expecting a night of great music and what we heard was something far beyond. The students of Chatswood High gave an incredible performance, their enthusiasm and skill was amazing to see. The work put in by students of the Big Band was evident, and the soloists gave some remarkable performances which highlighted their skill and maturity while performing. What amazed us the most however was seeing how our students were able to perform and not be outdone by
world class musicians. The skill and technique displayed by the Chatswood was not overshadowed by performers such as James Morrison. This opportunity gave our students a chance to see where their music can take them in life, and also work directly with some world class musicians.
All of the musicians of the Phat band in my opinion were soloists. James Morrison was an
inspiration and he made me want to practise more often.

I think the Phat Band gave a phenominal
performance. I want to be like Bernie Presser(drums). I was on the edge of my seat the whole way.
It was amazing! I enjoyed hearing James Morrison on the Superbone and his trombone solos.
The best part of the concert was when the Big
Phat Band played ‘Jazz Police’. Another good part was when James played his superbone. I really liked when the bari player played his solo. I learned that it is hard to be a pro at that level.
The Phat Band concert was fun and very interesting. They played good music.
Listening to the Phat Band was an amazing experience. All the people in the band were brilliant musicians. It was awesome to see so many students attending the concert.
I was not only lucky enough to see world renowned Gordon Goodwin and James Morrison perform with the Big Phat Band but lucky enough to see them twice! One of the most important things that I thought lifted the band to another level was the ease and confidence with which they played. I especially liked when the trumpets featured in ‘Backrow Politics’, and they kept doing all these crazy antics whilst trying to constantly one-up each other.

The Gordon Goodwin Band was such an amazing and
inspirational experience. It was fantastic how every band member was able to get up and show off their skills to everybody. My favourite songs were ‘Jazz Police’ and ‘Play That Funky Music’. I liked the guitar solo in ‘Jazz Police’. Amazing!!! How can the trumpets play so high? How does this band look so casual thought their music just blows your mind? The saxophone in ‘Play That Funky Music’ was just sensational. He was just crazily terrific! I had such a great time.
I listened and I enjoyed. Each player played with ease. The guitarist played without expression and moved only his fingers. I want to be able to perform with ease. Each member of the band had fun at some point in the concert. Most notable was when the percussionist who played bongos and congas ec, pulled out his sunglasses, played as hard and as fast as he could, yet pointed to the audience and stuck out his tongue. Members of the band looked at each other and passed jokes. Whilst they were always focussed on the job at hand, they enjoyed the moment. James Morrison played a number of different instruments also with ease. The band was awesome and were an inspiration to those who saw the concert.
The 1.30pm concert received a great response from the school audience. It was a fun concert and it was exciting. The concert was an amazing display of musical talent. We heard individual instrumentalists featured as well as the band as a whole. We also enjoyed listening to James Morrison.
