The first Concert Band at Chatswood High commenced in 1980 with approximately twelve students.
In 2015 over one hundred and seventy five musicians participated in one of the three Concert Bands. Students audition for the opportunity to play in Wind Orchestra. Grade 5 AMEB is minimum standard for students playing in this ensemble.
The Wind Orchestra comprises over sixty students of different ages and backgrounds. It is the show piece for the school and perform regularly during the school year.
The Wind Orchestra is directed by Gavin Staines.
A highlight each year is the tour of the North Coast of New South Wales.
A performance in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House is always a special occasion.
The band has toured overseas to New Zealand (three occasions) Hawaii, Europe (in 2004, 2009 and 2015) and to the USA (2000 and 2012).
In recent years the Wind Orchestra has enjoyed the opportunity to work with Australian Composer Dr Ralph Hultgren and Dr Mike Fansler from the Western Illinois University, USA.
The band toured to Europe in June/July 2015, visiting and performing in Prague, Vienna, Salzburg and Montreux. (see tour report and photos)
